Course Overview
The CPCS Red Card training for Mobile Crane Operator provides comprehensive instruction in safely operating mobile cranes. This intensive seven-day course covers crane setup, load handling, stability principles, and operational techniques for various mobile crane configurations.
Qualification Information
This extensive 7-day training course prepares you for the CPCS Technical Test for Mobile Crane Operator. You’ll gain hands-on experience with mobile crane operations, learning both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for safe crane operation.

Prerequisites:
No formal prerequisites required, though mechanical aptitude and previous equipment experience is beneficial. Candidates must hold a valid UK driving licence for road-going mobile cranes. Good spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination are essential. You must hold a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test passed within the last two years.
Certification Information
CPCS Red Trained Operator Card
After completing training and passing the CPCS Technical Test, you’ll receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Mobile Crane Operator (specific to crane capacity tested). This two-year card allows you to operate mobile cranes whilst gaining experience for your NVQ Level 2 qualification.
Progression to Blue Card:
Your Red Card period is crucial for developing operating skills across different crane sizes and job types. Work to build competence in various scenarios, gathering evidence for your NVQ assessment and Blue Card progression. To upgrade to the Blue Card, you must complete the NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations – Mobile Crane Operations within two years.
Career Development:
Red Card mobile crane operators typically gain experience on diverse projects. Starting roles often involve smaller capacity cranes, progressing to larger equipment as skills develop. This foundation qualification opens pathways to specialised crane operation, becoming a Contract Lift crane operator, or progression to supervisory and management roles.
