What is the Skilled Plant Operative (SPO) Card?
The SPO Card is part of the CPCS Assured Card Scheme and was launched in 2024 at the request of employers to provide an alternative route to recognising competence where traditional construction qualification routes are not suitable or available.
The scheme recognises the Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours (SKEBs) of individuals who work with plant and equipment but may not be able to achieve a traditional NVQ due to the nature of their workplace or industry sector.
The SPO Card demonstrates that the holder has achieved an acceptable level of:
- Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours
- Health and Safety Awareness
- Practical Competence
Who is the SPO Card For?
The Skilled Plant Operative Card is ideal for:
- Experienced plant operators
- Construction allied industries
- Manufacturing and industrial sectors
- Engineering and heavy industry
- Renewable energy and offshore projects
- Ports and marine operations
- Logistics and distribution sectors
- International projects and overseas operations
- Employers wishing to demonstrate workforce competence
International Recognition
The CPCS Assured Card Scheme has been adopted by organisations and industries outside traditional UK construction environments. The scheme specifically recognises that some industries and countries cannot always achieve traditional UK NVQ requirements whilst still requiring a recognised measure of competence.
The SPO Card is particularly suitable for international construction projects, offshore wind projects, heavy engineering, ports and logistics operations, defence and infrastructure projects, and global contractor workforces.
